Shatkarma is a group of six ancient yogic cleansing practices described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika that aim to purify the body and mind for higher states of health and spiritual growth. The word “Shat” means six and “Karma” means actions, and together they represent six methods of internal and external purification.
These include techniques for cleansing the nasal passages, stomach, intestines, and subtle energy channels, which help remove accumulated toxins, blockages, and impurities. By practicing Shatkarma, one experiences improved digestion, enhanced breathing, strengthened immunity, mental clarity, emotional balance, and a deeper ability to focus during meditation.
Each type of Shatkarma has a unique purpose, such as Neti for nasal cleansing, Dhauti for purifying the digestive tract, Nauli for massaging abdominal organs, Basti for colon cleansing, Kapalabhati for energizing the mind through breath cleansing, and Trataka for enhancing concentration through steady gazing. Together, these practices are not merely physical detox methods but powerful tools for harmonizing the body, mind, and energy, creating the foundation for vitality, inner peace, and spiritual awakening.
